Veracruz (Eastern)
Veracruz is a region defined by its deep-seated coffee culture, centered around the iconic "Coffee Capital" of Coatepec. Today, it stands as Mexico's second-largest producer and a global leader in high-altitude, sustainable agriculture, blending centuries of tradition with modern specialty innovation
1. Geography and Terroir
Location: Situated in eastern Mexico, bordering the Gulf of Mexico, with major production centered around the city of Coatepec and the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains.
Volcanic Influence: The region is significantly influenced by volcanic peaks, including the Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltépetl), Mexico’s highest mountain, and Cofre de Perote. This provides mineral-rich volcanic soil for cultivation.
Altitude: Coffee is grown at various altitudes, generally ranging from 600 MASL in lower zones to over 1,600 MASL in the high-altitude areas known as "Veracruz Altura". The prime specialty-grade coffee is found above 1,100 meters.
Climate: A humid, tropical climate is characteristic of the region. Proximity to the Gulf ensures consistent rainfall and high humidity, which contributes to a lush environment, but also potential challenges with fungal diseases like roya (coffee leaf rust).
2. Production and Scale
Output: Veracruz is consistently the second-largest coffee-producing state in Mexico, accounting for approximately 24% to 28% of the national output.
Acreage: The state has a significant agricultural footprint dedicated to coffee, estimated at around 140,000 hectares.
Producer Profile: Farms in Veracruz tend to be slightly larger than those in Chiapas or Puebla, with an average size of approximately 2.3 hectares. The region boasts highly technical and organized farming communities.
Historical Significance: Veracruz holds a vital place in Mexican coffee history; the first coffee plants brought to the country were planted here in the late 18th century.
3. Varietal Profile
Traditional Varieties: The region sustains a diverse mix of Arabica varieties, with Typica, Bourbon, Garnica, and Caturra being highly prevalent.
Modernization: Producers are increasingly introducing new, high-value varietals to the market. Some high-end specialty farms have begun cultivating Gesha and exploring unique cultivation methods like biodynamic farming.
Robusta Presence: While primarily an Arabica region, some lower altitudes in Veracruz do grow Robusta coffee, though the specialty focus remains firmly on Arabica.
4. Flavor and Processing
Classic Profile: Veracruz coffee is celebrated for its excellent balance, pronounced aroma, and typically smooth, sometimes light, body. Key tasting notes include:
Core: Caramel, toasted nuts, and vanilla.
Accents: Subtle red berries, green apple, and a signature floral undertone.
Processing Trends:
Washed (Wet) Process: This is the dominant processing method, emphasizing the coffee's crisp acidity and clean flavor profile.
Versatility: The balanced nature and rich aroma make Veracruz beans highly versatile, popular in both single-origin offerings and complex espresso blends.
Sustainability: Many producers are moving toward certified organic and fair-trade practices, leveraging the region's strong environmental identity.
