Karnataka Coffee: India’s Coffee Heartland

Karnataka is the powerhouse of Indian coffee, producing over 70% of the country’s beans. Nestled in the Western Ghats, districts like Coorg (Kodagu), Chikmagalur, and Hassan are renowned for their lush plantations, shaded by silver oaks and pepper vines. The region’s altitude, rainfall, and fertile soils create ideal conditions for both Arabica and Robusta varieties.

Flavor Profile:

Arabica: Smooth body, mild acidity, with notes of floral, citrus, and chocolate.

Robusta: Stronger body, earthy depth, with hints of spice, nut, and dark chocolate.

Karnataka’s coffee is often shade‑grown, preserving biodiversity and enhancing bean quality. Many estates practice sustainable farming, and the region is home to India’s celebrated Monsooned Malabar style, where beans are exposed to monsoon winds for a unique mellow flavor.
