In August 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced an innovative project using nuclear techniques to safeguard Tarrazú coffee authenticity. This scientific approach will help prevent fraud and guarantee consumers that their cup of Tarrazú truly comes from Costa Rica’s highlands.

Known for its bright acidity, full body, and aromatic notes, it has become one of the most sought-after Arabica varieties worldwide. In 2024, Costa Rica shipped its first deforestation-free Tarrazú coffee to Italy.

The buyer was Illy Café, marking a milestone in aligning with new European Union rules that ban imports linked to deforestation.

This pilot project was coordinated by UNDP, ICAFE, and CoopeTarrazú, showcasing Costa Rica’s leadership in sustainable agriculture.
