Protected Denomination of Origin

Efforts are underway to secure Denomination of Origin (PDO) status for Tarrazú coffee with the European Union and the World Intellectual Property Organization. This move aims to protect the authenticity of beans grown in the Tarrazú region, ensuring that only coffee produced under strict local standards can carry the prestigious name.

Science Meets Tradition

In August 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced an innovative project using nuclear techniques to safeguard Tarrazú coffee authenticity. This scientific approach will help prevent fraud and guarantee consumers that their cup of Tarrazú truly comes from Costa Rica’s highlands.

A Heritage of Excellence

Tarrazú coffee is grown at altitudes above 1,200 meters in Costa Rica’s central highlands. Known for its bright acidity, full body, and aromatic notes, it has become one of the most sought-after Arabica varieties worldwide. Although Costa Rica produces less than 1% of global coffee output, Tarrazú’s reputation far outweighs its modest volume

In 2024, Costa Rica shipped its first deforestation-free Tarrazú coffee to Italy.

The buyer was Illy Café, marking a milestone in aligning with new European Union rules that ban imports linked to deforestation.

This pilot project was coordinated by UNDP, ICAFE, and CoopeTarrazú, showcasing Costa Rica’s leadership in sustainable agriculture.

Export Significance

Tarrazú coffee is one of Costa Rica’s most famous exports, grown at altitudes above 1,200 meters.

Despite Costa Rica producing less than 1% of the world’s coffee, Tarrazú’s reputation for bright acidity, full body, and aromatic notes makes it highly sought after.

Coffee exports remain vital for rural communities and contribute significantly to the national economy.

Protecting Authenticity
